Bonus Optional Days: Thursday, September 15, 2022 and Sunday, September 18, 2022
Evangeline M. Mitchell, Esq., Ed.M. founded the National HBCU Pre-Law Summit & Law Expo in 2014. As an HBCU graduate herself (Prairie View A&M University) and after finding that the National Black Pre-Law Conference and Law Fair, which she created in 2005 was not attracting enough students from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and more time was needed to address their unique issues and concerns, she decided to create a special event specifically targeting HBCU students and graduates interested in going to law school and becoming lawyers.
With the encouragement and support of GeColby J. Youngblood, M.Ed. (Alcorn State University and North Carolina Central University) and the North Carolina Central University School of Law community, the inaugural event was launched at North Carolina Central University School of Law in Durham, North Carolina on Friday, September 19, 2014.
Subsequent events have been held in Atlanta, Georgia at Georgia State University College of Law (2015, 2016, 2019), Morehouse College (2016), Atlanta’s John Marshall Law School (2018), and Emory University School of Law (2018), and in Greensboro, North Carolina at North Carolina A&T State University (2017), Bennett College (2017), and The International Civil Rights Center and Museum (2017).

This was an amazing experience! I loved that it was tailored to African Americans/HBCU students, as most of this information isn’t traditionally made available to us. I especially benefited from the AccessLex Financial Aid Presentation. Looking forward to attending again next year!
Amazing Experience! Great for networking an definitely an eye opener. Speakers gave great insight and useful information
This was a well thought out and planned PreLaw Summit. There were ample opportunities to learn from admissions personnel and speak with current law students. HIGHLY RECOMMEND for anyone thinking about law or in the application process. I was able to make connections that will aid me in the long run. It’s a remarkable experience to be surrounded by black professionals!
If you go to a HBCU and you want to become an successful lawyer then this is the conference for you . It was a very wonderfull expericence and I would be back next year for other one !
This event literally was a game changer for me in my law school selection! I gained so much knowledge and am more excited than ever about attending law school. I am so thankful for the amazing BLACK attorneys I came into contact with this past weekend. They gave me so much insight and helped me understand that my BLACK is MORE than enough to compete in this world today. This experience was definitely one for the books. I cannot wait until I can give back and make an impact on someone in my current shoes in the future. Thank you so much Ms. Evangeline for hosting such an amazing event and allowing people like myself to get a better insight of law school.
I had such a great experience meeting other students interested in this field and the many panelists and speakers who shared their experiences with us. I left reinvigorated, inspired, and more knowledgeable. Without a doubt, I’ll be back!
All I can say is wow!! This Pre-Law summit was amazing from beginning to end! I personally had an amazing time meeting different lawyers and learning about their process from law school to their respected career. The information we received during this summit was very beneficial and definitely would recommend anyone who is interested in pursuing law school to attend!
In my humble opinion, this event was very beneficial and inspiring. I recommend this event any prospective law student, especially those of color. The networking opportunities, participants sharing their stories that one can relate to, and the fellowship among like-minded individuals who want to see each other succeed was invigorating, refreshing, but most of all, needed. I truly give thanks and I am forever indebted to Mrs. Evageline Mitchell and her team for a job well done in orchestrating this event and providing invaluable knowledge to not only myself, but to the many other prospective law students who were/are in need of that guidance and wisdom. Once again, thank you from the bottom of my heart and may God continue to bless you and the events that you create.
No. Although this event was created specifically for HBCU students and alumni, anyone can register and participate. However, we ask that only prospective law students, pre-law advisors, career advisors, professors, parents, mentors, supporters, law students and lawyers register.
Anyone who registers and is found to be trolling or disrupting the event in any way will be reported, taken out of the Summit immediately, and banned from future events.
The event founder will be hosting a special webinar and providing a strategy booklet to provide you with tips on how to approach and get the most out of the event. In addition, she will be hosting a special Q&A where she will be available to answer all of your questions as you get ready to prepare for the event.
The summit takes place on Friday, September 16th, 2022 and Saturday, September 17th, 2022. However, there are also two Optional Bonus Days. Thursday, September 15th, 2022 includes tours of non-HBCU law schools and the U.S. Capitol building, and Sunday, September 18th, 2022 which will include a visit to the Smithsonian African American Museum of History and Culture, and an African American Washington, DC Tour.
This year’s event will take place primarily at an HBCU law school – the University of the District of Columbia David A. Clarke School of Law. There will also be sessions at another HBCU law school – Howard University School of Law, which is literally a 5-7 minute walk from UDC Law. Further, there will be activities at other area law schools that we will make you aware of as we get closer to the event.
The address is 4340 Connecticut Avenue NW, Washington, DC 2008.
You can take an Uber or Lyft. You can also take public transportation via the Metro subway line, Redline, and get off at the Van Ness-UDC Metro stop. For information on the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, visit https://wmata.com/.
You will have to pay $12 for a parking pass. Note that this pass only allows for one entry.
Exit the Metro station. You will see Starbucks on your left. Turn left on the sidewalk where you see the business Eva Realty, LLC. Keep straight. You will cross the street at Windom Place and see a Potbelly Sandwich Shop on the corner. Keep walking and you will see a restaurant called Viet Chopsticks and then you will see a Gold’s Gym on the left. The law school is on the left at 4340 Connecticut Avenue NW.
We recommend the Days Inn by Wyndham Washington DC/Connecticut Avenue first because it is located extremely close to the UDC School of Law. It is only 390 ft. away and a 2-minute walk. We also recommend the Embassy Suites by Hilton Washington DC Chevy Chase Pavilion because it is close by (not walking distance) and you can take the Metro subway from Friendship Heights straight to Van Ness-DC. The trip takes about 12 minutes. The entrance to the Metro is at the bottom floor of the hotel. It is a short and easy trip. When you walk out of the subway stop, you will literally be only 0.1 mile away from the UDC School of Law, which is a 3-minute walk.
Although we will have some virtual sessions available online, those who participate in the virtual option and don’t attend will miss out on the full summit experience. Not only will they miss the primary plenary sessions featuring our keynote speakers and guest speakers, they won’t be able to partake in the complimentary continental breakfasts, receptions, movie night. Most importantly, they will miss out on major opportunities to network and connect with others in-person. However, there are some limited sessions online and there will be an opportunity to connect with others through the Whova app.
The schedule for the in-person event is on the website. The schedule for the in-person and virtual sessions will be available on the Whova platform.
Whova provides a way to provide live or pre-recorded content to those unable to attend in-person. It also enables all registrants to create profiles and has features to assist in the connection process such as their matchmaking feature that tries to connect you with others with the same interests as yours.
Just go to the Registration Center at the event, and we will check you in. If you already registered, it will be a smooth process. If you did not, you will have access to a computer station where you can go ahead and get registered.
Registration is completely free of charge! Only Law Expo exhibitors and those who are coming only as an observer are required to pay. However, seating is first-come, first-served. Make sure that you get to the conference site early and be ready to engage, learn and leave with much more than you came with! Please note that you are responsible for your own transportation costs (Metro or Lyft/Uber) for the law school tours, for admission to the optional museum visit and tour, and any other movement to additional events.
It is very important to be resourceful. Instead of thinking “I can’t”, start asking the question “How can I? ” Then, consider your options for finding a way. Think positively and recognize that when there is a will there is a way. If you are a student and don’t have any personal income, there are people who would be willing to help you. Talk to your school if you are still an undergraduate. Talk to your pre-law advisor, instructors, deans, etc. Ask your school to sponsor your trip. In return, ask if you can go back to your school and conduct a special presentation open to the entire student body where you share what you learned with other interested students at your school who are not able to attend. Be creative. Think about ways you can give something of value back in return for your school or organization sponsoring your trip. Remember that nothing is free, so you want to give an exchange.
We also encourage you to ask family members, friends, associates, and people you know, as well as organizations you are a part of to be your sponsors. Tell them that you are an aspiring lawyer and are raising funds for a trip to a national conference in our Nation’s Capital. Let them know the amount of money you need to raise.
Understand your value and what you have to offer as an individual and based on your social identity and experiences. Give concrete reasons why it is important for you to get the information and make the connections available at the event and the fact that you otherwise would not have this chance.
Write out your budget for the trip seeking out the lowest possible hotel and bus or airfare you can find. When you take the initiative and show people you are serious and what you can personally contribute and that you are looking for the least expensive, most cost- effective way to make this happen, then many would be willing to help you.
Don’t buy into the mentality of excuses. You must be relentless, especially since you are interested in pursuing a profession that does not reward passivity. Also, ask local lawyers’ groups and law firms. Ask. Ask. Ask. Don’t get discouraged if you get no response or a “no”. Someone will be willing to help you, even if they can only contribute a few dollars. Every cent counts.
If you have to, conduct fundraisers. Sell candy, baked goods, snack items, t-shirts. Wash cars. Think of a service you can provide in exchange for a fee. It is possible to come up with a few hundred dollars for an experience that can change your life. It is an investment in your future. I’m sure you have wanted something badly and figured out a way to get it before. This is no different. If an opportunity like this is provided, you must ask yourself “How badly do I want law school?” If you are serious, then we know you find a way to get there and will attend, especially since you don’t have to worry about a high registration fee that is typically attached to conference attendance.
Attendance at the conference on a very tight budget is possible and does not have to be expensive as long as you plan in advance. You may have to go through a budget airline which requires you to leave earlier or later, or the trip will take longer than you’d prefer at a discounted rate. Take a bus or train instead of a plane. Share rooms with a roommate, or at worst, if you can find a suite hotel, share with a small group of other pre-law students instead of having your own room. Choose a value hotel as you will spend most of your time at the conference while in town and not in your hotel room. Let us know if you are interested in attending and sharing rooms with another attendee. We are glad to try to connect you with someone also interested in sharing rooms. You may have to come to town with a specific budget whereby you save a small amount of money for snacks and other meals you want. The conference does not have to cost a lot if you carefully consider these issues in advance and plan accordingly.
All attendees should plan to dress in business casual or business professional attire. This means business suits, blouses, dress shirts and slacks. If you don’t have these types of clothes in your wardrobe, then do your best. We will NOT turn you away because of the clothes you are wearing, so wear the best you have and come so you can learn and connect with others with similar aspirations and those who want to help you.
There is no fee for visits to the U.S. Supreme Court and the U.S. Capitol. The U.S. Supreme Court has NOT yet resumed tours of their building or lectures. We will continue to keep checking to see if they will open back up before the event. The U.S. Capitol building has resumed tours.
